MSPeubiotic®, a food-grade prebiotic resistant starch,  is an effective treatment for acute and chronic diarrhea, and can also be used to support immune development and function.

Prebiotics, like MSPeubiotic®, are carbohydrates consumed in the diet that resist digestion in the stomach and small intestine, and pass into the colon where they are fermented by beneficial commensal bacteria.  As bacteria break down prebiotics, they produce short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) that promote homeostasis and gut health in several important ways:

  • SCFAs produced by bacteria stimulate reabsorption of sodium and water from the lumen of the colon back into the body, thereby reducing the volume in loose or runny stools.

  • SCFAs create an acidic environment that inhibits the growth of pathogenic bacteria that cause chronic cases of diarrhea.

  • SCFAs promote tight junctions between colon cells, optimizing barrier function and they assist in colonic repair.

Prebiotics found in the dam’s milk actually stimulate the growth of beneficial bacteria, such as Bifidobacteria and Lactobacilli, as soon as pups begin to nurse.  These bacteria are essential for stimulating the developing immune system and help to regulate immune function through interactions with the mucosal immune system.  Beneficial bacteria trigger the release of interleukin-10, a cytokine with potent anti-inflammatory effects.  Dietary supplementation with prebiotics like MSPeubiotic® during weaning and on into adult life ensure that these beneficial bacteria persist, continuing to reduce inflammation and reduce the risk of conditions like allergies and other immune-mediated diseases.
